About This Course

Often described as “Architect to the Stars,” Paul Williams left an indelible mark on architecture during a prolific career that spanned almost 60 years. The first African American member and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Williams became known for designs which were stylized and elegant. In this course, we explore his work, which stretches from Beverly Hills and New York to Paris and Colombia and includes luminary clients such as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Tyrone Power, and Lon Chaney. We also discuss his architectural legacy, including his Southern California historical styles, his modern designs, and the inspirational contributions he made to each city his designs enriched.
